A Student's Heart
Description
Extracurricular Project: GLOW 2022
Period: Dec 2021 – Nov 2022
Team: Vita van den Broek, Wouter Beelaerts van Emmichoven, Bas Hanrats, Twan Kleinbussink, Manon van der Pas, Dionne van Roij, Marco van Rooijen, Anne van de Ven & Erwin Wijbenga,
Coaching: Philip Ross
Project Goal:
GLOW is a yearly lighting festival in Eindhoven in which both well known artists and students display lighting art. For this year’s theme, we had to highlight an aspect of Eindhoven’s “urban skin”. We noticed that, even while Eindhoven has a vibrant student life and 15% of Eindhoven residents are students, the city is not very well known for being a student city. Therefore, this project aimed to highlight this perspective and emphasize the role of students in the urban skin of Eindhoven.
Process:
The project has been an iterative process, bouncing between trough brainstorming, prototyping, and gathering expert feedback from professional lighting artists. The feedback combined with the skills of the multidisciplinary team, allowed us to create high-quality prototypes. We used many physical realization methods like laser cutting and plastic moulding and were able to determine requirements of physical components to make them water- and dustproof for outside use. This while also managing a tight budget, since our resources were scarce, but we still had to produce many high-quality products.
The result was a network of many beating hearts, mounted on the facades of student houses. The presence of these hearts in such large numbers gave an impression to visitors what students mean to the city, and what the city means to them.
